  • Bad Hair and Bats

Some mornings my hair is less cooperative than others.

I'm told my hair is what makes me "distinctive." (note: not "distinguished")

As an aside, I always thought I'd be able to do well in comedies.

    Subject change.

I get up around 5:30 on weekdays, and 6:15 on weekends.

The past few days, I've heard something in the attic that has been awake, as well.

It sounds like it scurries, but not far.

    Perhaps a rat?

    Perhaps a bat?

I've looked a few times for a bat. They do find their way in, but I don't think they're good at finding their way out. I've seen their droppings, but haven't been able to find the little beast(s).

This afternoon, I looked carefully, since I knew I heard noises. First, I banged on the floorboards to see if I could startle a rat. Kind of compromising in retrospect, as my head would be poking through the floor at about eye level if I did stir one up. Imagine if one jumped on me, and ran down my body, and then into our bedroom and I couldn't find it.

Boy am I glad that did not happen. winky At least, I'm pretty sure it didn't.

What did happen is that I moved something things around after inspecting all the rafters. Finally - I heard hissing.

I kept moving things until I could get a good idea of where it was coming from. I finally found it inside of a rolled up piece of carpet.

So, I picked up the carpet and took it outside. I'm glad today was a nice day.

And then, I unrolled the carpet.

    Sure enough - brown bat.

I tossed it into the air, but it just plopped onto the snow. Who knows, it may be dehydrated. So, I put it in a tree and will let nature take its course.

  • Awww such a cute little guy!  I'm glad you got him back outside where he belongs :)

  • I hope he fares well back in nature. He was probably a bit in shock at the cold, and the light of being outside, after just waking from a cozy nap. Cute little bugger he is.

  • I like bats and rats. This made me laugh because you are obviously not versed in rat behavior. Banging around makes rats freeze and hunker down to wait until the 'danger' has passed. Rats that are hidden will not bolt unless you get really close to their hiding spot (they are less likely to be snatched for a snack when they hide in place as opposed to running in the open). Poor little bat was no doubt half dead from thirst and hunger...

Changing the subject - just be glad you have such luxurious locks!

  • One day we came home from VBS and there was a bat flying around in our house.  We used the broom but it was scaring the crap out of us.  It flew into the washer and I shut the washer and then turned it on.  I had to take the washer outside because I was afraid it was still alive after going through the wash but it was dead.

  • @TheTheologiansCafe - Very novel approach!!  A woman was bitten the other day when she reached for the faucet handle in the bathtub.  The bat was curled up under it.   We haven't heard the test results yet.

  • La la la la I CAN'T HEAR YOU!!!

  • @TheTheologiansCafe - LOL! I thought my reaction to bats in the house was bad, but you may be worse than me. Congratulations.

  • Well he's cute.

The first time I brought my country boy to my old apartment (on the 6th floor in the middle of the city, mind you), we were abruptly stirred awake by a loud flapping noise. To my surprise when I turned on the light there was a bat in my bedroom! If it wasn't for my dog at the time who lept in the air and caught him, we might have had a real issue on our hands getting him out.

I blamed my boyfriend for bringing the country with him.

  • @saintvi - You may remember that my wife and I shared that story on xanga TV.

  • I'm batty, but I wouldn't lurk in your attic.  I'd be afraid you'd show up with the bad hair cut.

  • @Such_are_you -  Now that's a great morning laugh!

@specialxplaces - THAT sounds like a comedienne's stand-up story. Thanks for that laugh, too!

  • Aww, it's cute!

When I was really young we lived in this tiny, run-down house.  Mom likes to tell the story of how we had about a dozen bats on our ceiling, and one dropped into my dad's prissy cousin's hair during a visit.  When she flipped out screaming, the rest of them decided to come down as well.

I wish I was able to remember it.  Thank heavens for a vivid imagination.

  • @chronic_masticator -  That sounds like a scene from the Addam's Family! Thanks for an afternoon laugh.

  • Bats are so cute.
