  • The Creeps

We have an attic that is used solely for storage.

Long ago, wasps liked to find their way in, but I've not seen them in years.

Bats like to take up summer residence and leave little brown sprinkles on the floor. When I find them, I catch and release them, unlike @SaintVI and @JoyousWind who prefer to put on a sitcom performance. laughing  (Read Holy Wingspan, Batman! for details)

Needless to say, I've been in close quarters in our attic with some creatures I would just as soon not. Today was a little different.

I found a broom and dustpan to clean up after the free-loading, well-hidden bats and then headed upstairs. When I got to the access door, I noticed a string hanging down from it.  The door was still closed when I first noticed it, but you can see the string in the picture below.

I climbed up the ladder/stairs as I usually do. The light switch is above where that string is hanging down.

Instead of turning on the light, I took hold of the string and thought I'd pull it to see what it was connected to.

    It pulled back.

    Okay.

I kept my cool, and turned on the light.  I gave it another tug.

    It tugged back.

I think it was probably hanging on something that was pulling back. And rationally speaking, I'm SURE that's what it was.

But the skin on the back of my neck and shoulders still aren't convinced.

  • I saw that string the other day. I chose to ignore. I knew you'd notice it eventually and go into the creepy attic to investigate.

  • HAHAHAHA! Creepy is right. I ave been saying with conviction for as long as I can remember, "We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of
all that is, seen and unseen." So I believe. Yep I do... And I believe I will never ever go into your attic not even if you paid me.

  • Yep... that is definitely creepy.

  • I would be spooked if a string I tugged on tugged back as well. I am curious if you further investigated and what you found.Once the light was on, did you follow the string to the other end, perhaps with a weapon in tow? You are alive to write this blog so I know you survived whatever you encountered. I'm sure it was not a bat doing the tugging, I've never heard of a bat playing tug of war before.

Bats to me are like cute fuzzy little mice with wings. When I lived on base we'd sometimes have them fly amidst the trees in the late evening. Once I met a met who researched bridge bats. He had a couple in cages and allowed me to feed them. I don't remember what we fed them, just the look of them chewing and how they were smaller and less savage than I used to dream them as a child.

  • Here's the spoon test. Knock twice. See if you hear a returning knock. If that's the case - there could be a problem up there.  Φ

  • It was a yo-yo.

  • I would definitely turn around and walkaway.

  • I'll bet God about bust a gut laughing at you!

I'm glad it was you and not me.

  • bet the cord is hung on a spring of some sort, there's almost always a reasonable explanation  you should hire some brave young punk to go up just in case though

  • That would compledtely freak me out.

  • Hum...A string on a nail, hanging from the ceiling, or....An extension of the attic.....More likely a crawl space, for the ventelation of heat to escape from the house.....Actually, you would need to push on the ceiling door to open it up, and see what you have....AND THEN!!! use the string to close it, which looks more like a rope than it does a string, lol!!!

  • I like to think I would have gone up and looked, but I don't know.  Definitely creepy!!!
